Papers of Charles James Apperley [Nimrod] [manuscript], 1797-1851.

Papers of Charles James Apperley [Nimrod], were bound in eleven volumes by collector John M. Schiff. They contain two distinct but related groups of papers. The first group consists of Apperley's correspondence with John Pittman, editor of "The Sporting Magazine" and after Pittman's death with various individuals concerning the claims of his estate. With these are corrected proof for an article, a partial manuscript of Apperley's "Road Work" and an engraving of "Nimrod." The second group consists of documents and correspondence concerning "The Sporting Magazine" including letters from contributors and readers, and legal documents regarding the financial confusion that followed Pittman's death. Major topics include fox hunting, fox hounds, hunting tours, racing horses and hunters, horse races, a German tour, John Loudon McAdam, Lord Derby, John Warde, Sir Bellingham Graham, Apperley's suggestions for improving the magazine's circulation, and his financial difficulties. Shuey on behalf of Mary Ann Pittman; Henry Crawter, executor of Pittman's estate; and William Young, the editor who suceeded Pittman.

John Loudon McAdam was born in Ayr in 1756. He became famous as a road builder, in particular for his seminal book Remarks on the Present System of Road Making (1816). McAdam was so influential that his surname has entered the English language as 'tarmacadam' and 'tarmac', a synonym for the tarred road surface he invented.
